Rebecca just rolled her eyes. “I’m not picking anyone. Right now, I just want to make good money and enjoy my life.”
The table went quiet for a second, and everyone lowered their hands. It was obvious they were all thinking about Rebecca’s last relationship. She’d just gotten out of a seven-year-long mess, and it was still too soon. Trying to push her into something new just didn’t feel right. Some heartbreaks could only heal with time.
Cindy gave Judy a look, and Judy got the message right away. She picked up a piece of fried chicken and set it on Rebecca’s plate. “Rebecca, you have to try this. It’s their specialty. Super tender, really tasty.”
“For real? Let me see.” Rebecca tried it and her eyes lit up. “Wow, this is actually so good.” Cindy grinned and added a few more pieces to Rebecca’s plate. “Eat up, seriously, you’ll love it.”
Just like that, talk of someone’s brother being boyfriend material faded away. The three of them dove right into gossip and food, laughing and chatting without a care.
When they’d nearly finished dinner, Rebecca checked the time. It was almost nine, way too late to make it to the murder mystery game they’d planned. The weather outside was getting warmer, so they decided to swing by the mall to check out the new spring collections.
Cindy and Judy were both from wealthy families and usually shopped at the fanciest places. This time, though, they figured Rebecca might not be used to those spots, so they let her pick.
“Rebecca, where do you want to go?”
Rebecca could tell they were being thoughtful and smiled. “You don’t have to tiptoe around me. I’m a six-figure exec, you know. I can handle myself.”
Cindy laughed. “Aww! You’re the best. Let’s do Golden Plaza.”
