The manager was stunned, then nodded, looking apologetic. “I’m sorry, sir. That was my mistake. Thank you for pointing it out. I’ll take care of it right away.”
The faces of the two salesclerks turned ghostly pale. Their eyes welled up as they pleaded, “We’re so sorry. We won’t do it again. Please forgive us.”
The manager watched the tall man walking away down the hallway, her voice full of regret. “It’s too late now. Do you even know who that man was?”
“Who was he?”
“He’s the heir to Duncan Corporation. Did you two just offend someone close to Mr. Duncan?”
The heir to Duncan Corporation?
How could they possibly have messed with anyone connected to Mr. Duncan? People in his circle were either rich or powerful. You could pretty much tell them apart from regular folks. They weren’t that clueless.
Unless…
The shorter clerk suddenly stiffened, a memory flashing through her mind. That girl who looked so down and out… what was her connection to Mr. Duncan?
Stephen drove straight home. When he got there, his mom was in the living room, reading a book with her reading glasses perched on her nose.
He slipped off his suit jacket and handed it to the housekeeper, then walked over to Chelsey and handed her the gift box with the handbag inside.
Earlier, he’d gotten a call from Chelsey while leaving work. She told him her pre-ordered bag had finally arrived and asked if he could pick it up on his way home. That was how he’d witnessed the shorter clerk rolling her eyes at Rebecca and making snide comments.
Chelsey opened the box, and as soon as she saw the bag she’d wanted for ages, her whole face lit up with a smile. She closed the box, but then noticed another shopping bag in Stephen’s hand. Her eyes sparkled with excitement.
“You little rascal. I guess all my spoiling paid off. You even bought your mom some clothes. But isn’t this brand a little too trendy for me? I’m pretty sure that’s the shop your sister likes.”
She reached for the bag, thinking it was for her, but her hand barely brushed the edge.
If he was asking about Maggie, he must have picked up on something. Had Rebecca gone to him with complaints?
“It’s nothing,” Stephen replied. “The board meeting is coming up soon, and there are a few details I wanted to check with Maggie. But I haven’t seen her around lately.”
Maggie was Chelsey’s assistant, mostly handling board business. Her hours and work locations were all over the place, so the easiest way to reach her was usually through Chelsey.
Hearing that, Chelsey relaxed a little. So it was just about the board meeting. She’d been overthinking it.
She set her teacup down and said, “She went home on vacation last week. She’ll be back tomorrow. If you need anything, just ask Liam to call her directly.”
Stephen looked at his mom. There was a storm brewing beneath his calm expression, but he kept it hidden.
He nodded. “Alright. You should get some rest, Mom.”
