Rebecca could see the emotion in Cindy's eyes, soft and pleading, and when she glanced at Chelsey, she found nothing but genuine regret on her face. Rebecca had always been someone who responded better to kindness than confrontation, so she let her guard down right away.
She fluttered her lashes and said, “Alright. Since it was just a misunderstanding and you truly mean your apology, I’ll accept it.”
Their glass met with a light, clear clink.
Chelsey seemed relieved by Rebecca’s easygoing response. The more she knew about this girl, the more she regretted her earlier outburst. And honestly, she’s taking a liking to Rebecca. If only this girl could really become her daughter-in-law, she thought.
Chelsey dug through her bag and pulled out the gift she’d picked out the day before, offering it to Rebecca. “Rebecca, you don’t mind me calling you that, do you?”
Rebecca froze for a second, then shook her head. “I don’t mind.”
Chelsey smiled. “This is just a little gift to express my feelings. I hope you’ll like it.”
Before Rebecca could even respond, Cindy took it upon herself to open the box. Inside was a delicate watch, the face and hands done in rose gold. The back was set with five tiny round diamonds, sparkling in a way that was both subtle and luxurious.
Rebecca’s first instinct was to refuse. This was way too much. She couldn’t accept such a pricey gift.
Chelsey caught on immediately. “I mean it as an apology. If you don’t take it, I’ll think you haven’t really forgiven me.”
Rebecca bit her lip, flustered. “That’s not what I meant.”
“Then take it, please.”
Chelsey nudged the box closer.
Rebecca could only sigh and accept it, though she still felt awkward about it.
Soon, the table was filled with all kinds of fragrant, beautifully presented dishes, and the conversation took a back seat to the food. The whole meal was surprisingly pleasant. Chelsey and Rebecca cleared the air between them, and Cindy, ever the peacemaker, couldn’t stop smiling.
