Avery had made sure the kitchen pulled out all the stops, setting the table with every dish Alan loved best. Sonja had even picked out a gift for her stepdad, wrapping it carefully and placing it beside her at dinner.
As they sat down, Sonja flashed Alan a warm smile and handed him the box. “Alan, I really appreciate everything you’ve done for us lately. If it weren’t for your friendship with Bryce, there’s no way NovaStack Cloud would’ve landed that contract so smoothly. This is just a little thank you from me. When Bruce isn’t so busy, I’ll have him take you out for a proper meal.”
Alan’s face lit up with surprise and gratitude. “Thank you, Sonja. You really don’t have to say that. We’re family. Helping each other is just what we do.” He glanced at Avery and added, “And tell Bruce not to stand on ceremony, either. Your engagement is coming up, and I know how hectic things must be. That’s what matters most right now.”
Alan felt a gentle warmth spread through him. For years, he’d been the odd one out in the Campbell family, sometimes even looked down on by the staff. Now, he finally felt respected, not just by the family but by his future son-in-law, too.
Sonja’s lips curled into a soft smile. “Alright then. On our engagement day, Bruce will give you a special toast. Deal.”
She honestly hadn’t planned on arranging another dinner, and since Alan had turned it down so graciously, that was one less thing for her to think about.
The whole dinner felt easy and relaxed. Avery kept reaching across the table to heap more food onto Alan’s plate. Alan couldn’t stop grinning. “That’s more than enough… You’re going to bury me under this pile.”
Sonja suddenly remembered something, setting her fork down. “Oh, right. Alan, when we ran into Rebecca at Skyline Capital not long ago, she said something about asking you for child support. Did anything come of that?”
She bit her lip, her eyes wide and innocent. “I should’ve known Sunforge Tech was presenting that day. I never would’ve brought you if I knew. She probably blames me for the whole thing. After all, she lost that huge order from Skyline Capital… I’d be upset too if it were me. I just hope it didn’t make things worse between you two.”
Alan put down his fork as well, letting out a heavy sigh. “Sonja, you’re just too good. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought about what it would be like if you were my real daughter. But don’t worry. Rebecca was just talking. She wouldn’t actually come to me for child support.”

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
