The good news just kept coming.
Back at the hotel, Cindy’s phone buzzed with a message that had her practically bouncing off the bed. “Rebecca, we’ve got a huge breakthrough!”
Rebecca glanced over, a little skeptical. “What kind of breakthrough? We haven’t even met the client yet.”
Cindy waved her phone. She was grinning so hard she could barely get the words out. “It’s from overseas. The private investigator finally found something about Sonja!”
Rebecca’s curiosity was instantly piqued. “Seriously? What did they find? Spill!”
Cindy leaned in, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “So, get this. Turns out, Sonja got reported for cheating by her classmates during both undergrad and grad school, but both times the university basically ignored it. And that’s not all. When she was doing her master’s, someone anonymously accused her of having her thesis ghostwritten. That blew up for a bit, but again, nothing really happened. Here’s the crazy part—the investigator actually visited the university where she supposedly got her PhD. Not a single professor or staff member there had ever even heard of her.”
Rebecca’s eyes widened. It hit her all at once. Sonja’s doctorate... was totally fake.
Cindy let out a snort of disbelief. “I used to think her degrees were just bought, but it’s actually totally fake. That’s next level. Everyone bows down to ‘Dr. Campbell,’ and it turns out she’s just a fraud.”
She wasn’t finished. “Oh, and while they were digging, the PI found out Sonja’s private life was crazy when she was overseas. She was always hanging out with a guy. Apparently, he’s been around her for years. If we can track him down, he probably knows everything. This could make things a lot easier.”
Rebecca’s mind raced. Could that be Shawn? She remembered hearing the rumor from ex-colleagues at NovaStack Cloud. They’d said Shawn arrived out of the blue, supposedly thanks to Sonja’s personal recommendation. The weirdest thing was, Shawn seemed to handle all of Sonja’s business, and he actually seemed to like being under her wing. The whole arrangement was... odd.
Staring out the window at the darkening sky, Rebecca felt a swirl of emotions she couldn’t quite pin down. She’d only met Shawn a handful of times, maybe exchanged a few words, but the idea that he might have anything to do with Sonja left her feeling unexpectedly disappointed. Maybe, deep down, she’d started to think of Shawn as a friend. She hoped he wasn’t involved.
