Shawn shook his head, his voice low and rough from too many cigarettes. “It’s okay. Feed them some hints, but make sure there’s nothing they can use against us.”

“Got it.”

He hung up, his dark eyes swallowed by the shadows around him. As for his enemies, he’d handle them with his own hands.

Rebecca and Cindy grabbed a cab to the hottest bar in town. The place was packed, alive with music and laughter. Cindy barely made it through the door before she was in full party mode. While scanning the crowd, she spotted a girl trapped in a booth, surrounded by a group of guys trying to make her drink. The girl squirmed, desperate. “No, stop it, let me go!”

People glanced over, but no one actually did anything. Cindy pushed up her sleeves, a fierce protectiveness kicking in. “She said she doesn’t want to drink. Didn’t you hear her?” She stormed over, yanked the bottle away, and reached for the girl.

The guys in the booth just stared, caught off guard. Then they really saw Cindy and their eyes lit up.

“Hold on, who said you could leave?” one of them sneered, reaching for Cindy’s face. “Wow, this one’s even hotter. I like her.”

Rebecca noticed Cindy was gone and quickly spotted her arguing with the men. She rushed over from the dance floor, her voice sharp.

“Back off.” She smacked the guy’s hand away, pulling Cindy behind her.

That set the whole group off.

“Seriously, what are the odds? One pretty girl after another.”

“And they just walk right up, ready to party. Come on, sweetheart, have a drink with us.”

Rebecca looked around. They were outnumbered and the guys were all bigger. She took a steady breath and tried to keep things calm.

“My friend’s had too much to drink. Sorry for the trouble. We’re leaving now, so you can get back to your night.”

She started to pull Cindy and the other girl away, but one of the guys blocked her, grabbing her wrist tight.
