Lottie was shaking, her voice barely above a whisper. “Why… why did you bring me to the hospital?”
Morris let out a sharp laugh. “What do you think? There’s only one reason. An abortion.”
“No. Please, you can’t do this. The baby is over five months. If you force an abortion, it could kill me.”
“Now you’re scared of dying? Where was that fear when you went after Sonja with a knife? What were you planning then?”
Tears and snot ran down Lottie's face, her words coming out raw and broken. “She lied to me… I’m in this mess because she tricked me.”
Morris’s eyes were cold as he yanked her hair, leaning in close, his words sharp and cruel.
“She lied, so you tried to kill her. What about you lying to me? You had it all worked out at the hot spring, didn’t you? You got pregnant from a one-night stand, and tried to use the baby to make Paul marry you. Too bad you picked the wrong man to play. Lottie, I’ll make sure you regret ever trying to set me up.”
Lottie dropped to her knees, hands clasped in desperate prayer. “I’m sorry. Please, I’m begging you, for the baby’s sake, let me live. I don’t want money. I don’t want the Terry family to take care of me. Please, just let me go and I’ll disappear.”
Regret flooded her, sharp and bitter.
Why couldn’t she just walk away when she had the chance?
Why didn’t she take the twenty million Madison offered?
She’d done the math. Even a few million would have been enough for her to escape the Bernan family and live a good life.
Now, she could only hope Morris had even a sliver of mercy left in him. Maybe he’d let her go for the baby’s sake.
But hope faded when he looked down at her like she was already dead, his voice dripping with disgust.
