The light was so harsh, it made her flinch, and she covered her eyes on instinct. After a few seconds, she peeked through her fingers, her vision slowly adjusting.
Standing right in the middle of the room was a tall man, his presence almost ghostly. He flashed a sharp, unsettling grin. “Go on, run. Why aren’t you running now?”
Lottie shook uncontrollably, fear running through her like ice water. She knew there was no hope for her. Only despair.
When she woke up again, she couldn’t even tell how many days had passed. She sat up in bed so quickly it made her dizzy, then threw back the covers and pressed her hand to her stomach. It was flat. Completely empty.
Tears stung her eyes. She’d lost the baby.
She tried to get out of bed, but pain stabbed through her lower body, cold sweat breaking out all over her skin. Just then, the door swung open.
She was stunned to see Robert and Olivia walk in.
Lottie remembered that phone call—the one that had left her feeling completely chilled. Her voice was icy. “What are you doing here?”
Instead of answering, Robert slapped her. Then again.
Smack. Smack.
He glared at her, practically shaking with rage. “You are so shameless. You just slept around and got yourself pregnant! If Mr. Terry hadn’t told us, we’d still be in the dark!”
He looked like he was about to hit her again, rolling up his sleeves, but Olivia stepped in and grabbed his arm.
“Don’t. Not her face, at least. We’re taking her to see Lewis tomorrow. If Lewis sees marks on her face and changes his mind about the marriage, we’ll be screwed.”
Robert let out a frustrated huff. “You’re right, you always think of everything.”
Lottie lay there, staring at them with cold, dead eyes. She listened as they talked about her like she was some animal being sold at market the next day. Anger burned inside her. Of course she was furious.
But what could she do? Run?
When Robert and Olivia came in, she’d seen all the bodyguards lined up outside the door. After her last two attempts to escape, Morris had clearly decided to keep her under constant watch. With that many people guarding her, she didn’t stand a chance.
Robert and Olivia muttered to each other for a few more minutes, then left. Not once did they ask if she was hurt or how she was feeling.
