Tomorrow was Bruce and Sonja’s engagement party. Both families had some serious clout in Coralbridge, especially the Lamonts. Everyone who was anyone in the city’s elite circles would be there, and the Duncans were on the guest list too.
Cindy waved the invitation in front of Rebecca, trying to reassure her for what felt like the hundredth time. “Rebecca, seriously, don’t worry. My brother and I are just showing up for form’s sake. We’re not planning to hang around.” She tilted her head, a mischievous glint in her eye. “I’ll hand Bruce my big gift, then make my exit.”
Rebecca hadn’t thought much of it. Whatever drama she had with Bruce and Sonja was her own problem. She wasn’t the type to tell her friends who they could or couldn’t talk to. But when Cindy mentioned her “big gift,” Rebecca couldn’t help but get curious.
“What are you up to?” she asked.
Cindy snapped her fingers. “Tomorrow, I’ll drop some news to stir things up. Then, later in the evening, I’ll release a little evidence.”
Rebecca asked, “Last time you said you found out Sonja was always with a guy when she was abroad. Did you ever figure out who he is?”
“Yeah, I did, but…” Cindy dug through her bag and pulled out a few photos. “This guy is careful and sharp. Whenever he’s with Sonja, he keeps a mask on most of the time. He only lets his guard down in fancy, private places.”
Rebecca took the photos. It was just a side profile, but she recognized him right away. The man in the picture was definitely Shawn.
Her fingers tightened around the photos. Her heart just dropped. Lately, she and Shawn had been messaging back and forth about work stuff, talking about industry trends and new government policies. It felt like they’d been friends forever. She’d always wanted to ask if he was the one helping Sonja, but she could never bring herself to say it. Now that she knew for sure, she felt this deep, unexplainable sense of loss. Like she’d just lost a kindred spirit.
Tomorrow was Saturday, so as soon as the workday was over, most people in the office disappeared. Rebecca left on time too. As she was turning off the lights in her office, she noticed Judy at her desk, sneaking glances her way.
“What’s up, Judy? Did you need something?” Rebecca asked.
Judy looked caught off guard, a little embarrassed. “No, nothing. Bye, Rebecca.”
Rebecca smiled. “Bye.”
