Rebecca couldn’t find the right words. She understood that getting her mom to change her mind was going to take time. There was no point in rushing. Besides, she and Stephen had just started dating. They hadn’t even made it past the trial phase. Who knew what would happen down the road?
“I got it, Mom. You should get some sleep.” Rebecca stood up and went to her bedroom.
Samantha watched her leave, sighing again. In her mind, she was already thinking about which young men in the neighborhood were still single. If Rebecca wasn’t into Paul, she could always set up another date.
After taking a shower, Rebecca crawled into bed and grabbed her phone. Scrolling through the news before sleeping was practically her nightly routine. That’s when she saw a message from Stephen. [Home safe. Goodnight, my girlfriend.]
Her heart skipped a beat. She couldn’t help but smile as she quickly sent him a cute goodnight sticker.
Stephen must have been waiting by his phone, because he replied right away. [Goodnight. No need to reply. Get some rest.]
Rebecca held her phone with both hands, grinning like an idiot. She scrolled through the news for a bit longer before finally putting her phone down to sleep. But she just couldn’t settle down. Her heart was racing and she kept tossing and turning. It wasn’t until the middle of the night, when her eyelids felt impossibly heavy, that she finally drifted off.
When she woke up, it was already ten in the morning and she felt totally refreshed. She stretched lazily, got up, and went to wash up.
After getting ready, she wandered into the living room but didn’t see any sign of Samantha.
“Mom?” She peeked in the kitchen. Nothing. She checked the bedroom. Still nothing.
She figured her mom must have gone out for groceries. Not thinking much of it, Rebecca went to the fridge, grabbed some eggs, and made herself a hearty breakfast.
She finished eating and washed her bowl, but Samantha still hadn’t come back. That’s when Rebecca started to feel uneasy. Why was her mom gone so long?
She headed to her bedroom to grab her phone and tried calling her mother. The call just kept ringing. No answer.
Rebecca’s heart dropped. She hurriedly threw on a jacket and was about to run out to the market when her phone rang.
“Hello? Mom?”
But it wasn’t her mother’s voice. It was Sonja.
