Rebecca agreed, hung up, and waited for Stephen to text her. The message came almost right away. She grabbed her bag, booked a ride on her phone, and hurried out the door, barely glancing at her screen. She didn’t even see the second message Stephen sent.
At the Duncan family home, Cindy noticed her brother staring at his phone for way too long. “What’s up?” she asked.
Stephen shook his head. “Nothing.” He finally pocketed his phone and headed upstairs to change.
By the time he came back down, Cindy was all done with her makeup. As they stepped out, she pouted. “When I see them later, I’ll have to put on a fake smile and toast them. I might just throw up my breakfast.”
Stephen laughed. “When we get there, find Rebecca. You don’t have to stick around with me.”
Cindy’s eyes lit up. “Rebecca’s coming too?” Then her brow furrowed. “Wait, why would she come? She was so firm about not going before. She even threw the invitation away.”
Stephen’s face clouded over. “I don’t know.”
That’s when Cindy pieced it together. “Wait… the call you got just now… that was Rebecca, wasn’t it? But hold on—something’s off.”
She couldn’t figure it out right away. The thought nagged at her. It wasn’t until they got in the car that it finally hit her. She slapped her thigh. If Rebecca wanted to go to the engagement party, wouldn’t she text her first? Why would she call her brother instead?
She shot Stephen a look from across the back seat, but he was lost in his own thoughts. He kept wondering why Rebecca suddenly changed her mind about coming. The fact that today’s groom was his current girlfriend’s ex—and almost her fiancé at that—made his mood even darker.
When the car pulled up at the hotel, Rebecca jumped out. Without an invitation, the security at the door wouldn’t let her in. She tried everything, from reasoning to pleading, but the guard wouldn’t budge. Sonja’s phone was unreachable, no matter how many times she tried.
She was starting to panic when someone familiar stepped out from the ballroom. It was Paul, tall and handsome as ever. He looked shocked to see her. “Rebecca? What are you doing here?”
