Bruce didn’t hold back. He shoved Sonja with everything he had, and she hit the floor so hard her forearm was scraped raw.

She glared up at him, furious. “Have you lost your mind? Look at me! How am I supposed to go out there and toast everyone like this?”

Bruce’s eyes were ice cold, locked on her. “After what you said on stage, you really think we can just go out there like nothing happened? Everyone out there is talking about us right now. I’m the joke of the night.”

Sonja sat there, her anger flickering into guilt for just a second. Now that the adrenaline was gone, she had to admit—maybe she’d gone too far. But pride wouldn’t let her say it out loud.

She muttered under her breath, “You’re overreacting. People will laugh about it for a minute, then move on. No one’s going to say anything to our faces. Come on, Bruce, just change your clothes so we can get back out there.”

She stood up, called a makeup artist over to fix her face, then walked over to Bruce and softened her voice. “I won’t make decisions on my own anymore, alright? Next time, I’ll talk to you first, I promise.”

What’s done was done. There was no point fighting about it now. The only thing left was to figure out how to face everyone out there.

Bruce let out a heavy sigh and turned to change his suit.

That’s when the door swung open and his family walked in.

“Grandpa.” Bruce’s face drained of color. He knew they’d come to confront him, but he didn’t expect them to show up so soon.

He opened his mouth, voice shaky. “I’m sorry, about what happened on stage…”

Before he could get another word out, Cooper slapped him, hard. The sound seemed to echo in the room. “You’ve embarrassed us all! Do you even know who was at this party tonight? You’ve made the whole Lamont family a laughingstock!”
