Kelley shot Hector a look. “Come on, say something.”

Hector’s eyebrows were drawn tight. “Dad, now’s really not the time for this. What matters most is fixing what’s in front of us. The emcee already tried to save this for our family. He said it was all just a joke. I had my assistant reach out to Ms. Harper, too, to make sure she’ll go along with it. No matter who asks, we’ll stick to our story with Ms. Harper and say it was just for show. I doubt anyone will keep gossiping after that.”

Cooper let out a long sigh. “You always think things through, Hector.”

But Hailey just arched an eyebrow. “Really? Dad, are you that sure Ms. Harper’s going to work with us? Everything Sonja said was true, after all. It was my little brother who dumped her. And I heard Ms. Harper didn’t even want to show up today. Sonja forced her to attend by kidnapping her mother here. Ms. Harper must be totally pissed right now.”

The Lamont family was hearing all of this for the first time. They all turned, staring at Sonja.

Sonja shrank back, shaking her head. “That’s not it. It wasn’t kidnapping. I invited her and her mom. Actually… Rebecca and I are sisters. Rebecca’s real dad is Alan. Since we’re sisters, I just wanted her at my engagement party to see an important moment in my life. That’s not wrong, is it?”

No one in the room believed her for a second.

Kelley was so furious she forgot all her usual grace and rolled her eyes at Sonja, hard.

Cooper gave Sonja a sharp look, then spoke to Hailey. “Hailey, talk to Ms. Harper yourself. Whatever she wants, give it to her. As long as she helps us pull this off today, I don’t care what it costs.”

Hailey nodded. “Yes, Grandfather.”

“And as for you two,” Cooper’s eyes went cold as he looked at Bruce and Sonja, “not another word from either of you. You know what’ll happen if you do.”

Bruce lowered his head. “I understand, Grandfather.”

He took Sonja’s hand, his face completely blank, and led her toward the dressing room.
