The three of them sat there, stumped. Since none of them could figure it out, they let it go for now and headed back to the banquet hall for dinner.

Rebecca stayed quiet, just picking up food for her mom and putting it on her plate.

Rebecca said quietly, “You should be thinking about how to help Sonja get through this.”

“Help Sonja? Why me? She has hands, she has a fiancé,” Shawn said, like he really didn’t get it.

Rebecca lowered her gaze. “You know exactly why.”

True or not, the rumors were spreading like wildfire. If they went out now, the whispers alone would be enough to drown them.

Sonja finally snapped. “What is your problem? Mr. Lamont already said to move on, and he’s even found a way to fix things. Why do you keep bringing it up? Seems to me you just don’t want Bruce and me to have a smooth engagement.”

Kelley was stunned. The Sonja she knew was always sweet, polite, and obedient. But now, Sonja looked ready to fight back, like she’d just ripped off her mask. Maybe the stuff online was true after all.
