“Kelley, let’s just talk, okay? Violence won’t solve this.” Avery said, forcing a smile.
“Mom!” With her mom finally here, Sonja’s frustration exploded. “Look at my face. She just slapped me. If you hadn’t come in when you did, this old witch would’ve beat me senseless. I’d never be able to show myself in public again.”
Old witch. Kelley almost choked, her anger flaring up. She took a shaky breath and scoffed, “You think you can show your face after this anyway?”
“You’ve been throwing shade at me since you walked in. What are you even trying to say?” Sonja shot back, glaring.
Avery gently tugged Sonja’s arm, trying to get her to hush.
“Why should I keep quiet? I’m not the one who messed up. Mom, why aren’t you backing me up?” Sonja’s eyes filled with tears as she looked to Avery for support.
Kelley rolled her eyes. “You really think you can cry yourself out of this?” She pulled out her phone and held it up to Sonja’s face. “Take a good look at what’s all over the internet right now. You better hope none of this is true. If it is…”
Suddenly, Hector’s deep voice rang out from behind. “There’s no point in continuing with the engagement today.”
Cooper stood next to him, silent but furious, making it clear he agreed.
Bruce’s face tightened, a sinking feeling growing in his chest. What could have made his parents and grandfather so upset? He glanced at Sonja, then at the phone in front of her.
