Bruce’s eyebrows knit together. Was it really Rebecca? How could she have changed so much in less than a year?
He let out a silent sigh, his eyes flashing with cold determination. If it really was her, he wouldn’t hesitate. The Lamont family’s reputation was on the line, and so was his own future. He didn’t have a choice.
After a brief pause, Bruce finally spoke. “If that’s the case, let’s call the police. Let them take care of it. Whoever spread these rumors has to pay the price.”
Call the police?
Sonja and Avery exchanged a worried glance. Only the two of them knew the truth—the posts online weren’t fake at all. Everything really happened. If the police got involved and started investigating, how could they possibly cover it up?
Sonja’s mind raced. She quickly clung to Bruce’s arm and spoke softly. “Bruce, maybe we shouldn’t rush into calling the police. Your father is already handling PR, and we know who did this. I’ll handle it quietly myself.”
She added, “Besides, Rebecca’s still my step-sister, and she’s your ex. For everyone’s sake, we shouldn’t go too far.”
Avery nodded in agreement and nudged Alan. “Exactly. Rebecca is your daughter, Alan. You’ll take care of it, right?”
Alan pointed at himself, completely lost. “Wait, me?”
Why did it always have to be him? After his last run-in with Rebecca ended with jail time and losing five million, Alan had learned to keep his head down. Plus, he had his hands full with his new business. He barely had time for Rebecca and her mother anymore.
Under Avery’s piercing glare, Alan caved. “Alright, fine.” But in his mind, he was already figuring out how to slip away. He’d nearly made enough money, and if he could just finish one last deal, he’d be set for life. Now was the perfect time to disappear.
