When Brett heard the name, his face changed for a second, but he still reached out his hand. “Ms. Harper.”
Stephen glanced over at Rebecca. “This is my cousin, Brett. He’s been living overseas. He just got back yesterday.”
Rebecca understood right away. So that was why Jaime had called him home yesterday. It was because Brett returned.
She shook his hand. “Hello, Mr. Duncan.”
The three of them chatted for a bit. Brett kept sneaking glances at Rebecca. Whenever she looked his way, he’d quickly look away like nothing happened. After the third time, Rebecca started to feel weird. Did Brett know her from somewhere?
She was still thinking about it as she left, riding the elevator down. As the doors opened, she almost bumped into Cindy.
Rebecca told her about running into Brett upstairs.
Cindy frowned. “Wow, I didn’t think he’d actually show up.”
Rebecca bit her lip. “I don’t remember you ever mentioning him before.”
“Yeah, well.” Cindy lowered her gaze. “He and my aunt have lived abroad for years. They never come back unless they have to.”
So that explained it. Rebecca didn’t ask more, since it’s their family business.
She turned to head back to her office, but Cindy caught her arm and tugged her into a quiet corner. She dropped her voice. “Rebecca, you want to know about my cousin, right?”
Rebecca felt her cheeks heat up. “Was it that obvious?”
Cindy grinned. “Totally obvious. You never ask about people you don’t care about. The moment you asked, I knew. But I’m not telling. I’ll let my brother fill you in.”
Rebecca’s eyes flickered. “I don’t think that’s a good idea. For one thing, I barely know Stephen. And he’s so busy… really, I just got curious, that’s all.”
She explained the whole three-month trial period thing.
Cindy gave her a look that said, Are you two for real? But she got it. Rebecca had just been hurt by her last relationship. Being careful made sense.
“Don’t tell anyone about us, okay?” Rebecca said quietly. “Not a single person.”
She gave a half-smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “If things… don’t work out, at least it won’t be too awkward.”
Cindy nodded. “He’s not like Bruce. He’d never do you dirty.”
Rebecca just smiled. Love never came with guarantees.
Then Cindy’s face twisted in exasperation. “Speaking of Bruce, did you hear? Cooper’s furious. He might actually call off the engagement. If Bruce insists on marrying Sonja, Cooper could kick him out of the Lamont family. But Bruce is totally brainwashed. He really believes Sonja’s innocent, that the rumors are all made up. Honestly, he’s completely lost it. The evidence online is rock solid, but he still takes her side. I swear, love makes people crazy.”

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
Can't wait for the next update! 😍...
Honestly, Rebecca's mother needs to be called out for pettiness. At the same time, Rebecca needs to explain her work situation to her mother....
