Cindy washed her face, keeping her eyes down the whole time. She didn’t look at Jon once, not even when they finished breakfast and left for work together.

In the elevator, Jon watched her reflection in the glass. He looked like he wanted to say something, but Cindy just kept her head down, staring at the floor. He seemed to get the hint and stayed quiet.

When they got to the office, they split up and went straight to their desks without a word.

All morning, Jon sat at his desk, but his mind was somewhere else entirely.

“Jon, how do I handle this feature?” Judy walked over with her laptop, hoping for some help. She blinked in surprise when she saw only two lines of code on his screen.

Jon felt a little embarrassed and quickly closed the window, then turned to explain the product requirements to her, trying to play it cool.

Right before lunch, Jon picked up his phone, hesitated, then finally sent Cindy a message. [Do you have time for lunch? Maybe we can talk.]

Rebecca was totally fine with it, but poor Judy looked a bit worried.

Rebecca poured Judy a glass of iced water and handed it over. “If it’s too spicy, just dip your food in the water before you eat.”
