“Maybe we should call the police,” Bruce said.
No. That wasn’t an option either.
Sonja was so angry she bit her lip until she tasted blood. “Next time you see her, I want you to hit her back for me!”
“Sonja,” Bruce let out a tired sigh, “don’t start. Let’s just go home.”
Sonja looked at him, completely stunned by how cold he was. “She just hit me and you’re just going to walk away?”
Bruce met her gaze, his eyes flat and unfeeling. “I gave you two ways to fix this and you shot both down. So what do you want me to do?”
The way he stayed calm made Sonja feel hopeless. Tears slipped down her cheeks.
Bruce, I’ll remember how heartless you were today. Soon... you’ll be begging me on your knees.
Meanwhile, Rebecca found the Rolls-Royce and climbed into the back seat.
Stephen had his laptop open, but as soon as she got in, he closed it and set it aside.
“Wow, Mr. Duncan, working even on a date?” Rebecca teased, grinning. “Makes me look like a total slacker.”
Stephen smiled and pulled her closer, wrapping his arm around her waist. “I have to work hard so my employee can take it easy.”
Rebecca couldn’t help but laugh. Why did that make her feel so happy all of a sudden?
She snuggled into his embrace. Stephen took her hand and kissed her palm, but then he noticed how red and hot it was.
Like she’d just hit someone.
Rebecca caught him staring at her hand, his brow slightly furrowed. She just smiled. “Ran into those two dogs again on my way over. I couldn’t help myself. Gave one a couple of slaps.”
The air between them went still for a moment.
His phone, still in his pocket, had a message on the screen from the mall’s founder.
Suddenly, Rebecca looked at him, her eyes serious. “I heard from Cindy that Jaime specifically asked Brett to join this board meeting.”
Stephen’s dark lashes flickered, and he made a low sound of agreement.
He never let his real feelings show, so his smile was back almost instantly. “Brett’s family. He’s always had a spot on the board, just never showed up when he was living abroad. Now he’s back, so he’ll be there.”
Rebecca squeezed his hand. “No matter what, I’ll be with you.”
Stephen pulled her close. “Don’t worry. Everything’s going to be fine.”
Two days later, the board meeting went ahead as planned. Rebecca, just a regular employee, wasn’t in the loop about any of it.
But the very next day, HR sent out two announcements to everyone in the company.
The first one read: Because of Sunforge Tech’s outstanding performance, the group has decided to officially bring Sunforge Tech under its management. They’ll get priority for funding and resources.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
