Another announcement hit the company chat. Brett Duncan was named the new Executive President of Sunforge Tech, and the current CEO, Rebecca Harper, was moved to Vice President, now reporting directly to Brett. The change was effective right away.
The news spread instantly, and Sunforge Tech practically exploded with gossip. Everyone was dying to know who this new Mr. Duncan was.
“He’s a Duncan. Must be Stephen’s family.”
“My friend at headquarters told me he’s Stephen’s cousin. He’s been living abroad and just came back. The moment he returned, they handed him the top job at a subsidiary.”
“Of course. Some people are just born with every advantage. He’s nothing like us.”
But not everyone was thrilled.
“So what if he has family ties? Why should some rich kid with no real experience get to swoop in and replace Ms. Harper?”
“Right? Ms. Harper is a legend around here. She knows the tech, she gets the products, she can land any client. What can this new guy actually do? Probably just talk a big game.”
Still, most people were actually excited. Now that they were officially part of the bigger group, they’d get better corporate benefits. The announcement also promised more funding and resources, so the company’s future was looking brighter.
While all of this was blowing up, Cindy was out meeting a client. The second she read the notice, she rushed back and burst into Rebecca’s office.
“Rebecca, did you see the announcement?”
Rebecca glanced up, her eyes a little lost. “Yeah, I saw it.”
Cindy paused, then grabbed Rebecca’s hand. “Rebecca, you have to believe me. I had no idea, and I’m sure my brother didn’t either. If he’d known, he never would’ve let this happen.”
Cindy’s jaw tightened. “I’d bet anything this was my grandfather’s call. I can’t believe he’d make a move like this and not even warn us. He didn’t say a word to any of us.”
The disappointment and resentment hit Cindy hard. All these years, while her aunt and Brett had been gone, it was just her, Stephen, and her mom looking after her grandfather and running the company. But the second Brett came back, her grandfather couldn’t wait to put him on the board. And now, he’d gone even further, making Brett the Executive President of Sunforge Tech. The favoritism was impossible to ignore.
Rebecca nodded. That was exactly what she thought, too. Stephen had no idea this was coming. No one had warned him.
Rebecca tried to smile, reaching for a lighter tone to comfort Cindy. “It’s okay. It’s just a new boss. They’re not cutting my salary or taking away my benefits. As long as those are the same, I’m not going to stress about the rest. Besides, is Brett really that intimidating? He’s not a monster, and he’s younger than me. I’m not scared of him.”
Even so, Cindy was still furious. “Why do they get to do this? Why wouldn’t they at least tell you? Even people about to get executed know what’s coming. They just demote you out of nowhere. This is straight-up bullying. I’m going to talk to my brother right now.”
