His voice dropped lower, rougher. “I didn’t protect you. Someone gets to hurt you.”

Rebecca grinned. “Come on, your girlfriend isn’t some damsel in distress. I can hold my own, trust me. No one’s messing with me. Actually, I have to come clean. Remember the other day at the movies? I lied. I didn’t run into two random dogs. It was Bruce and Sonja. I even slapped Sonja a few times.”

The mood instantly shifted, turning light and funny.

Stephen started laughing again, his voice soft and close. “That explains why your palm was all red.”

Rebecca lay back, crossing her legs with a satisfied little smile. “Now do you believe me?”

Stephen smiled, nodding. “Yeah, I believe you.”

But there was a sharpness in his eyes, a promise. He wasn’t about to let anyone hurt his girlfriend.
