The next morning, Marissa’s heels echoed across the office floor. She had barely sat down at her desk before Brett called her over. “Go find Ms. Harper and get the project schedules for these accounts.”

Marissa put on her brightest smile and agreed, but when she pushed open the door to Rebecca’s little office, nobody was there.

She froze, then let a smirk spread across her face.

Really? Skipping work already?

She marched straight to Brett to report, “Mr. Duncan, Rebecca isn’t here.”

Marissa checked her watch and let out a dramatic sigh. “It’s already nine, and she’s still not here. As a vice president, she should be setting a good example for everyone. That doesn’t look good, does it?”

Brett’s expression shifted, his eyes suddenly cold and sharp.

He stood up and walked straight to Rebecca’s office. Sure enough, it was empty.

Brett frowned and headed for the elevators. Marissa hurried to keep up.

In the elevator, Marissa kept stirring things up. “Mr. Duncan, Rebecca is really overstepping. How could she move to the fifteenth floor without your approval? She’s clearly challenging your authority. I think she’s upset you got promoted over her and she’s doing this on purpose. Maybe you should just let her go.”

“Marissa,” Brett said, rubbing his temples, tired, “I know how to handle it.”

Marissa’s smile faltered. “Of course, Mr. Duncan.”

But inside, she was fuming. He acts all tough with me, but in front of Joan, he’s just a big simp.

On the fifteenth floor, Cindy was passing out sodas, grinning. “Here’s to our new office!”
