Marissa stared after him, totally baffled. She stomped her foot and hurried to catch up. “Mr. Duncan, you’re just going to let it go? People who don’t listen should be fired. If you let it slide, they’ll only get bolder and look for new ways to challenge you.”

Brett glanced at her and pretended to clean out his ear. He couldn’t help but think, how could someone as quick-witted as Joan have such a dumb cousin? He said, “I still need her help. Who else is going to show me the ropes around here?”

This time, Brett had come back determined to prove himself. He wanted Joan to see that he was just as capable as Stephen, maybe even more. He wanted her to know he deserved her love.

Downstairs, Marissa didn’t follow him into the office. Instead, she slipped away to the stairwell beside the bathrooms and pulled out her phone.

“Joan, she is really something. Even Brett can’t do anything about her,” Marissa reported, her voice full of gossip.

Joan was quiet for a second, then she let out a soft laugh. “Really? Sounds like she’s pretty talented, then.”

Marissa rolled her eyes. “Talented? Please. That’s just what people say. I bet she got the job by sleeping with someone powerful in the company.”

Joan suddenly remembered the photo of Stephen and Rebecca together. Her fingers dug into her palm, but her voice stayed calm. “Marissa, don’t say that. I read online that she actually won an award. Stephen was the one who gave it to her.”

“What? Stephen gave her the award himself?” Marissa blurted, then quickly lowered her voice. “Oh, I get it. She must be sleeping with Stephen. That explains how she became president at Sunforge Tech.”
