If things had gone differently, everything he and his mother wanted would be right there for the taking.
But that was just wishful thinking. Regret wouldn’t change a thing now.
Bruce understood there was no going back. He tossed his cigarette out the window, took a steadying breath, and started the engine.
It was fine. Even without Rebecca, he’d prove himself to his grandfather. Once NovaStack Cloud went public, all the praise and success would belong to him.
He floored it all the way to the NovaStack Cloud building. After parking, he headed upstairs.
In the elevator, he noticed a bunch of unfamiliar faces. None of them seemed to recognize him, and they didn’t bother to say hello, either.
Bruce frowned. The elevator doors opened on the second floor, the R&D department. The group of strangers all got out together.
He followed, curious. He wanted to know which department these people belonged to and who was running things so poorly that no one even knew basic manners.
To his shock, as he looked around the entire R&D floor, he didn’t spot a single familiar face. He paused outside the glass doors, scanning every desk. From the project leads to the team members, all of them were new.
When had this happened? Why didn’t he know anything about it?
Just then, an older employee walked by, someone Bruce recognized right away.
“Jim, are these all new hires? What happened to everyone else? Did they get reassigned to client sites?”
Jim looked surprised, then let out a long sigh. “Mr. Lamont, you really don’t know? More than half the company’s quit recently. These are all new people.”
He hesitated, then added quietly, “I’m leaving in two weeks, too.”
Bruce stared at him, stunned. “Why? Did another company try to poach you? Or is it the salary, the benefits?”
Kane let out a deep breath, relief clear on his face. Finally, Mr. Lamont was seeing the problem.
He hurried to call HR, telling them to prep the data and charts and bring their laptop straight to Bruce’s office.
Luckily, HR already had everything ready. They ran turnover reports every month.
Half an hour later, the HR manager walked out of the executive suite, laptop in hand.
Inside, Bruce stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, staring down at the street below, his mind racing.
A knock on the door broke the silence. Kane stepped in.
“Mr. Lamont, Dr. Campbell’s on her way. She’ll be here soon.”

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
