At a tucked-away café near the company, Sonja and Shawn lounged over their coffee, looking completely at ease.
Shawn stretched out his legs and shot her a lazy sideways glance. “You’re not heading back? Aren’t you worried he’ll start getting suspicious?”
Sonja just smirked. “I’ve got the last stock transfer agreement in my hands now. That makes me the majority shareholder.”
Shawn’s smile was hard to read.
He stared at his coffee, fingers circling the rim of his cup. After a pause, he finally said, “You’ve got what you wanted. Isn’t it time you let me go?”
Sonja raised her eyebrows, surprised. “You want to leave?”
Shawn took a slow sip, his voice edged with resentment. “If you hadn’t threatened me, I never would have come back in the first place. Now that you’ve got what you wanted, I don’t see any reason to stick around.”
He sounded so genuine, Sonja didn’t doubt him for a second.
Everything was unfolding just the way she planned. All she needed to do was wait.
With that in mind, it didn’t matter if Shawn stayed or left.
She nodded. “Fine. You can pick your own resignation date.”
She bit her lip and threw him a look, all confidence and flirtation. “If you want to see me before you go, I’ll leave my schedule open.”
Shawn acted like he didn’t even hear her.
He grabbed his car keys, slid on his sunglasses, and stood up. “No thanks. Engaged women aren’t my thing.”
“Shawn, did you forget something?” Sonja asked, her voice teasing.
Shawn looked puzzled. “What do you mean?”
Sonja’s smile turned sly. “Did you forget about your little sister?”
Shawn lowered his eyes.
That so-called sister wasn’t really his sister.
It’s kind of complicated. Everyone and everything around him was just part of his bigger plan.
She quickly reminded herself she was the one in charge now. There was nothing to be afraid of.
She set her bag down and walked over, draping her arms around his neck as if nothing was wrong. “What’s so urgent? I just got back from Skyline Capital. They said if we roll out the first features on schedule next week, they’ll send over the first payment. That means our IPO is a sure thing and we can keep moving forward.”
Bruce peeled her hands off one by one, his voice ice cold.
He dropped a file onto the desk with a sharp smack. “Do you know how many people have quit this company in the last three months, six months, and year?”
Sonja’s smile faded. “I don’t really pay attention to little things like that. I’ve been focused on the project.”
“Little things,” Bruce repeated, a mocking smile on his lips. “So I guess you don’t know where they went either?”
He stared at her, his eyes cold. “The best of them all went to Sunforge Tech. Do you have any idea what that means for us?”
The questions came so fast her head spun.
She honestly didn’t care who left or where they went. All she cared about was when the company would go public and how much she could cash out.
