Suddenly, the taste of blood filled his mouth. He wiped it away with the back of his hand, staring at the vivid red smeared across his skin. His chest tightened, his eyes stinging.
So this is what it feels like to be betrayed by the person you trust most.
Rebecca flashed through his mind. So this must have been how she felt. He really was a fool, letting someone stir up a few doubts and then giving up on their relationship.
Bruce glared at the girl on the sofa, his eyes rimmed red. He pressed a hand to his chest, struggling to breathe. “Why? Why would you do this to me? I’ve always stood up for you, trusted you, and you set me up? Just tell me why.”
Sonja rolled her eyes at him, her voice full of disdain. “Blame yourself then. You’re too naive, too willing to believe anyone.”
“What did you say? What did you just say, you—” Bruce staggered toward her, hand reaching out. He meant to grab her, to shake some answers out, but his strength gave out and he collapsed onto the carpet.
He had never felt so pathetic.
Sonja bent over him, her face suddenly soft, almost gentle. She wiped the blood from his lips with her fingertips like she cared. “Bruce, can we just forget this ever happened? Go back to how things were? You handle the company, and I’ll take care of everything else. You do what you’re good at, and I do what I’m good at. Like before. Doesn’t that sound good?”
Bruce spat out a mouthful of blood, his jaw clenched. “No way!”
Sonja’s face went cold.
“If that’s how it is.”
She reached for the ashtray on the coffee table, her movements steady and unhurried.
Five minutes later, Sonja straightened her clothes, opened the door, and called out, “Kane, could you please take my fiancé to the hospital? I have another meeting. Thanks.”
Kane hesitated, but when he saw Bruce lying in a pool of blood, his face went white. He clapped a hand over his mouth to keep from screaming.
When Bruce finally woke up again, a whole week had passed.
He touched the bandage on his forehead and let his eyes close, memories of that day slowly coming back to him. His face was hard, jaw locked tight.
