In some ways, Bruce had it coming. If he hadn’t gotten involved with Sonja, if he’d just kept his distance from the start, none of this would be happening now. Kane knew better than to say that aloud. He only dared to think it, quietly, in his own mind.

They got Bruce discharged from the hospital pretty quickly, and as soon as the paperwork was done, Bruce told Kane to drive him straight to the office.

On the road, Kane hesitated before speaking. “Well, if you really want to go after Sonja, you could report her for assault. The police would have to take it seriously.”

Bruce sat slumped in the back seat, looking like all the life had been sucked out of him.

He gave a bitter laugh. “So the whole world can see me for a joke? Bruce Lamont, the guy who got played by a woman. Kane, you don’t need to get mixed up in this. And you probably won’t last much longer at the company either. You should start making plans for yourself. If you need any help, just come to me. Don’t hold back.”

Kane’s feelings were a tangled mess. He let out a long sigh. In all the years he’d worked for Bruce, he’d seen both sides of him. Sure, Bruce could be arrogant and selfish, but he also knew how to look out for his people when it mattered.

They pulled up to the NovaStack Cloud building. Bruce and Kane walked in as usual and tried to swipe their access cards at the security gates, but nothing happened.

A young lady from the front desk rushed over, looking panicked. “Mr. Lamont… I’m sorry, it was Dr. Campbell’s orders…”

Bruce’s jaw tightened. He spoke through clenched teeth. “Open the door.”

The receptionist shrank back, clearly rattled by the tension in the air. She hurriedly pulled out her own card and let them through without another word.

They headed straight for the top floor.

As soon as they stepped into the executive office area, everyone stopped what they were doing and stared. The office was already quiet, but now it felt like the air had been sucked out of the room.

“Mr. Lamont…” someone called softly, coming up to him.
