The heads of the project and tech departments hurried out of the office. At the elevator, they leaned in close, sharing a look that said everything. That woman was just impossible. No matter how much they got paid, it wasn’t worth their peace of mind. Or their lives, for that matter. They didn’t even need to discuss it. They just nodded, made a silent agreement, and decided to quit on the spot.
Bruce was in the lowest place he’d ever been. After losing his company, the first thing he did was go to his father, Hector, hoping for help.
Hector’s face went from shock, to clenched-jaw frustration, then finally to a tired sort of defeat. “Son, it’s not that I don’t want to help you. I just can’t. I told you before to break off the engagement with Sonja, but you wouldn’t listen. Now look at what’s happened. What do you want me to say?”
He looked up at Bruce, seeing his son standing there, head down, silent. Hector knew Bruce must regret it all even more than he did, but that didn’t fix anything.
Hector paused, then said, “I can’t help you with the company, but I know some good lawyers. I’ll ask them to see if there’s anything they can do.” He took a black credit card from his wallet and slid it across the table. “Take this. It’s a secondary card. Use it if you need anything. And don’t tell your mom yet. Don’t get her worried.”
Hearing his mother’s name, Bruce finally snapped out of his daze. From the moment his father started talking, he already knew Hector wouldn’t save him.
Bruce’s eyes went dark. A crooked smile pulled at his lips. So this was where he got his cold, selfish streak. He left the black card on the table. Even at rock bottom, he couldn’t bring himself to rely on his parents.
It was the middle of July, hot winds blowing in from the street, but Bruce felt nothing but cold. Ever since he’d came back, he’d just kept climbing. He’d never experienced a fall like this before. Now he knew how much it hurt.
He wandered to his car, slumped into the driver’s seat, and leaned back, exhaustion written all over his face.
