He stepped closer, closing the gap between them until they were just a breath apart.
Bruce’s eyes softened as he watched her. After all this time, she still made his heart race.
He couldn’t hold back any longer. “Rebecca, let’s start over. Come back to me, will you?”
He reached out, wanting to touch her face, but Rebecca knocked his hand away without hesitation.
She glared at him, her chest heaving. This was unreal. Absolutely unbelievable! How could anyone be so shameless?
Rebecca had thought her heart was numb to him, but his pathetic plea still managed to light a fire of anger inside her.
She suddenly wondered, just how far would Bruce go for the sake of his company?
She gave him a hard smile, tipping her chin in challenge. “Is that really your idea of an apology?”
Bruce blinked in surprise.
Her reaction threw him off, but deep down he felt a flicker of hope. If she was asking for something, maybe she was willing to help him.
He swallowed, forcing himself to sound humble. “I know I was awful this past year. I really hurt you, and I’m sorry.”
Then, as if making up his mind, he let go of his umbrella and dropped to one knee in front of her.
Rain poured down, blurring his vision and soaking him to the bone, but he didn’t care. His eyes, red and desperate, locked onto Rebecca’s.
“Rebecca, please...” His voice was hoarse, barely more than a whisper. “Come back to me. The company and I... we both need you.”
Rebecca stared down at him, her face cold and unreadable, though the anger in her chest began to settle.
She gripped the handle of her umbrella, ready to turn and walk away, when suddenly an arm wrapped tightly around her waist, pulling her back.
Rebecca’s heart skipped a beat. She followed the strong arm to its owner.
Rain ran down his face, chilling him to the bone. Bruce’s lips trembled as he forced out, “Mr. Duncan, why are you here?”
Stephen let out a soft laugh, almost mocking him.
He spoke calmly, every word clear. “I’m here to walk my girlfriend home. And Mr. Lamont, you should know that harassing another man’s fiancée is against the law.”
Bruce seemed to collapse in on himself. He was shaking so badly that he fell from one knee to both, sinking into the wet pavement.
His face was ghostly pale. He whispered, “No... no way. She can’t be your fiancée. Rebecca is mine. She’s mine...” He kept muttering as he struggled back to his feet.
Stephen’s jaw tightened. He stepped in front of Rebecca, shielding her.
But Bruce didn’t try anything else. Instead, he turned away and stumbled through the rain toward his car.
Rebecca and Stephen traded a look, both still tense. She put a hand to her chest, trying to calm her pounding heart. “That was scary. For a moment, I thought he might actually try something.”

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
