Stephen kept his eyes on the path where Bruce had disappeared, replaying that wild look on Bruce’s face. He couldn’t help frowning.

“From now on, don’t be alone with Bruce. Actually, don’t see him at all.” He hesitated, feeling like that wasn’t enough. “I’m going to have a bodyguard pick you up and drop you off at work every day.”

Rebecca burst out laughing. “Isn’t that a little much?”

“You’re not mad at me, are you?” Stephen’s voice was soft, almost pleading as he watched her.

Rebecca blinked, caught off guard. “Why would I be mad?”

He rubbed his nose, looking sheepish. “For letting everyone know what’s really going on between us.”

She smiled, surprised he even remembered their old agreement. “Of course not. But…” She bit her lip, giving him a playful look. “We’re just dating. Let’s not jump the gun with the whole fiancée thing. Don’t go around making stuff up.”

Stephen pulled her into his arms, resting his head gently on her shoulder. He let out a quiet murmur, then tried to explain himself. “It’s not that I don’t trust you, or think you still care about him. And I wasn’t trying to show off. I just…”

He sighed, frustration in his voice. “He got under my skin. I lost my temper and it slipped out. I’ll be more careful next time. I promise.”

Rebecca hugged him back, her hands moving softly along his back. “It’s fine. If you can’t help yourself, then just say it.”

Stephen’s eyes brightened, hope flickering there. Did she mean what he thought she meant?

“Rebecca, I forgot to ask. Can I request to go official early?”

His voice turned ridiculously hopeful, just a bit too eager.

Rebecca couldn’t hold back a laugh and gave his arm a playful twist. “Look at you, greedy much?”

He only leaned in closer. “So, is that a yes?”

She stared at him, amused and a little helpless, running her fingers through her hair. “Let me think about it.”

It wasn’t such a big deal to her. The only problem was her mom, who was still totally against the idea.
