Bruce slumped back against the desk, eyes shut tight, feeling like the whole world was caving in on him. Three times. That was the third person lately who had told him he’d made the wrong choice.
But Rebecca wasn’t his anymore. She was with someone else now. The memory of that guy’s hand on Rebecca’s waist made Bruce’s blood boil. He wanted to tear him apart.
His eyes, red and tired, locked onto the finance manager. “It’s fine. I’ll get Rebecca back. She still cares about me. She’s just… lost her way for a bit.”
He stumbled out, barely keeping himself upright.
The finance manager watched him go, shaking his head. He’d never seen Bruce look so wrecked. “No wonder they broke up,” he muttered. “H he still doesn’t get her after seven years. Ms. Harper’s way too level-headed to ever go back to him.”
At the Campbell estate, Avery almost collapsed when she got the call about her daughter’s arrest. The butler caught her just in time.
Avery clung to his arm, her voice shaking. “Get Alan. I need to see Sonja, right now.”
The butler hesitated. “Ma’am, Mr. Campbell hasn’t been home in two weeks. Didn’t you know?”
Avery froze. Two weeks? When was the last time she’d actually seen Alan? She thought back, a little dazed. Ever since Sonja’s engagement party, Alan had been coming and going, disappearing for days.
She clenched her fists. “Useless! He’s never there when you actually need him.”
She hurried the driver to take her to the police station. It took calling in a lot of favors, but finally, Avery got to see her daughter.
Sonja had only been locked up for half a day, but she already looked like she hadn’t slept in weeks. The second she saw her mom, her numb face crumpled. “Mom, please, get me out of here. It’s filthy, it stinks, I can’t stay in this place!”
Tears spilled down Avery’s cheeks. “Don’t worry, honey. I’ll get you out. No matter how much it costs, I’ll make sure you’re free.”
At the mention of money, Sonja fell apart all over again.
“Mom, our plan failed. NovaStack Cloud went bankrupt. It’s not going public. All those shares we bought back are worthless. It’s all gone. Everything’s ruined.”
Avery had already heard about NovaStack. On the way over, she’d braced herself for the worst.
