Back when Timothy had mentioned the job at Coralbridge Bank, Rebecca had thought of someone who would be an even better fit than herself. That person was Shawn.
Should she ask if he might be interested?
Rebecca pressed her lips together, torn about what to do.
The elevator doors slid open. Cindy nudged her. “Let’s go, Rebecca.”
Rebecca snapped out of her thoughts and tucked her phone away.
In the conference room, she had just set down her laptop when her phone buzzed on the table.
She picked it up. It was a message from Shawn.
Her heart jumped. Was he psychic or something?
She looked closer and realized what had happened. Earlier, when Cindy had bumped her at the elevator, Rebecca’s finger must have slipped and accidentally sent Shawn a laughing emoji.
No wonder he replied with a single, confused question mark.
Rebecca cringed, toes curling in embarrassment. Still, she forced herself to type a quick explanation. [Sorry, I sent that by accident.]
He replied right away, almost as if he’d been waiting, [Alright.]
Since they were already talking, Rebecca figured now was as good a time as any to ask if he’d consider the Coralbridge Bank job. With NovaStack Cloud bankrupt and Sonja out of the picture, maybe he was looking for something new.
There was a long pause. Then Shawn finally replied, [Thanks, but I’m not in the country anymore. Maybe we’ll meet again someday.]
Rebecca felt a dull ache in her chest.
He was already gone.
She hadn’t even gotten the chance to say goodbye.
She stared at her phone for a few seconds, then typed back, [Maybe we’ll meet again.]
Jon didn’t say a word. He just walked straight over and sat next to Cindy.
Marissa glared, ready to call him out, but Brett cut in first.
“Alright, now that everyone’s here, let’s get started.”
His eyes swept the room and paused on Rebecca’s. She met his gaze, steady and unflinching.
Brett looked away on purpose and started, “Today, we’re focusing on the R&D priorities for the rest of the year. Mitch, want to share your thoughts?”
Mitch looked startled, pushing his glasses up again, eyes uncertain.
At that moment, Marissa shot him a look, reminding him of what she’d told him last night.
Mitch hadn’t forgotten. He stammered, “I… I think our current product line is a little too narrow. Maybe we should look at developing new products to branch out more. For example, some private equity clients have wanted to work with us, but we don’t have anything that fits their needs.”
A small smile flickered on Brett’s face. That was exactly what he’d been thinking too.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
