Rebecca’s eyes bounced back and forth between the two of them. “Are you…” she started, but before she could finish, Cindy jumped in, her voice sharp and panicky. “There’s nothing going on between us, okay?” Rebecca narrowed her eyes. That sounded a little too quick to deny, but before she could say anything, her phone started ringing on the table.

It was Samantha.

“Rebecca, can you take the afternoon off and come home?”

Rebecca’s heart shot straight into her throat. “Mom, what’s wrong? Did something happen?”

Her mom just sounded mysterious, refusing to explain anything. “Just come home if you can,” she said, and then hung up.

Rebecca’s mind started racing. She remembered the recent news about Alan stealing money, and she couldn’t help but worry he might be bothering her mom again. She didn’t even have time to talk to Brett in person. She submitted a leave request, shot him a quick message explaining why she had to go, and practically ran out of the building.

Marissa noticed Rebecca grabbing her bag and making a beeline for the exit. He couldn’t wait to tattle, so he marched straight into Brett’s office. “Mr. Duncan, Rebecca just left without your approval. She’s totally ignoring your authority as CEO.”

Brett glanced at his phone, finally seeing Rebecca’s message. Still, his face stayed cold. He pulled out the employee handbook and flipped through it. Leaving without permission counted as absenteeism, which meant a public warning for everyone to see. Brett let a small smile slip. It was the perfect chance to set an example.

Meanwhile, Rebecca was so anxious she barely noticed she’d run two red lights on her way home. She parked, rushed to the elevator, and stood breathless at her front door. When she walked in, the lights were on but the living room was empty. Her legs almost gave out and she collapsed onto the sofa, her face pale as she called out, “Mom? Mom, are you here?”
