The last few times they saw each other, she’d been distant, but at least she could handle being in the same room as him. Now, she couldn’t even manage that. Paul felt a sharp ache in his chest, a bitterness that wouldn’t let go. He couldn’t help but wonder if Morris had been right. Was she really with Stephen now?
Paul’s eyes narrowed as he thought about it. Did Rebecca even know who he really was? Was she just jumping from one mess into another? Was it worth it? Lost in thought, he didn’t even notice his grip tightening until the grape in his hand burst, juice splashing all over his white shirt. He snatched a napkin and tried to wipe it away, but the purple stain stood out even more, impossible to ignore.
Suddenly an idea came to him. He picked up his phone, turned slightly, and snapped a close-up of the stain. Without meaning to, he caught Rebecca’s silhouette in the background of the shot. A small, satisfied smile played at his lips as he typed out a caption and posted it on his socials.
After closing the kitchen door, Rebecca lowered her voice, frustrated. “Mom, why do you keep letting Paul in? And seriously, you tricked me into coming home.”
Her mom just smiled, looking a little guilty. “If I told you Paul was here, would you have come back? You’d have done exactly what you did last time—come up with some excuse and stay out late.”
Rebecca frowned. “But you still shouldn’t have lied. I was working.”
Samantha brushed it off. “You’re the CEO. You run the whole company, don’t you? Who’s going to say anything if you take a break?”
Rebecca pressed her lips together, not saying a word. She hadn’t told her mom about everything that was happening at work lately. She didn’t want her to worry. She never expected her mom would use that as an excuse.
She ran her hand through her hair. “Mom, please don’t do this again. And no more inviting Paul over. If he shows up uninvited, just don’t ask him to stay for dinner. It’s too awkward.”
Samantha tapped her lightly on the forehead, then set aside the knife and spoke in a gentler tone. “Rebecca, listen to me. The Lamont family and the Campbell family are both out of the picture now. There’s nothing in the way anymore. You and Paul can finally be together. No one will gossip or try to interfere. Why can’t you give Paul a real chance?”
