Brett let out a sharp sneer when the thought crossed his mind. “Oh please, who told you that? Was it Ms. Harper? They never see eye to eye, but I didn’t think she’d actually go over my head and complain. She really doesn’t think much of me as her boss, does she?” He gave Stephen a pointed look. “Next time she tries anything like that, let me know. We need to keep some order around here.”
Stephen’s brow furrowed. “You’re reading too much into this. She’s not the kind of person to break the rules.”
Brett scoffed. “Is that so? Honestly, I thought you called me in here just to stick up for Ms. Harper. Guess I was wrong.” He kept an eye on Stephen’s face, searching for a hint of guilt, but Stephen looked calm and unbothered.
Brett’s expression soured even more. “If that’s all, I’ll go downstairs and revise the proposal.”
As soon as Brett left, Liam finally worked up the nerve to knock and step inside.
“Mr. Duncan, the Sales Director wants to have lunch with you. He’d like to discuss channel expansion for the second half of the year. Should I set it up?”
Stephen paused, pen in hand, thinking for a few seconds. “Let’s wait on that.”
“Alright, I’ll hold off on replying,” Liam said, then slipped back out.
Stephen picked up his phone and called Rebecca.
“Hello? Why are you calling me on your personal cell?” Rebecca sounded genuinely surprised. At work, Stephen always used the office line. He only used his cell for personal things, never company business. Something was definitely off today.
Stephen’s voice was warm, almost playful. “Because I’m calling as your boyfriend, not your boss.”
Rebecca felt her cheeks flush. She hurried into the lounge, quietly shut the glass door, and lowered her voice. “You found out, didn’t you?”
There was only one thing she could think of that would make Stephen call her like this: the incident with the email that morning. Her heart felt strangely warm.
She looked down and spoke softly. “Don’t worry about me. I’m alright. Yesterday I was in a rush and messed up. I’m just so used to telling you when I need time off and not worrying if the process is finished. I’ll be more careful from now on.”
