Rebecca frowned, her fingers tightening around the note. Who was it? Who had been following her? The little girl had found her too easily, slipping her the note without a single misstep. There was no way that was just chance.
She flattened the paper and read it again. Stephen’s past...
Could the person in that private room be—
Rebecca paused, caught between curiosity and caution. Usually she made decisions in a heartbeat, but right now, she was stuck. After a moment’s hesitation, she made up her mind. She picked up her skincare products and headed straight for the elevator, pressing the button for the fifth floor.
When the doors slid open, a waitress was already waiting. “This way, please.” She led Rebecca down a quiet hallway and into a private room.
A decorative screen cut across the space, adding a touch of d charm and mystery. Rebecca coulmake out a figure behind it, but couldn’t tell if it was a man or a woman.
“You wanted to see me?” Rebecca took a seat, setting her bag down beside her. Her face gave nothing away.
The person behind the screen laughed softly, then stepped out and sat across from her. It was a girl. And not just any girl—she was strikingly beautiful. Dark hair, glowing skin, a simple white dress that showed off her shoulders and neck. Her features were soft, almost gentle, but a small mole just below the right side of her mouth gave her an air of unforgettable allure.
As Rebecca studied her, the girl’s lips curved in a faint smile. Joan was sizing her up, too. So this was Stephen’s taste. Had he always liked this type, or was he just unable to let her go? Joan’s eyes flickered with something unreadable as she tucked a lock of hair behind her ear.
“I honestly didn’t think you’d come. Most people don’t want to hear about their boyfriend’s past, right?”
Rebecca met her gaze, cool and direct. “Even if I hadn’t shown up, would you really have dropped this? Since we were bound to run into each other eventually, I’d rather just deal with it now.”
Joan smiled. “Now I see why Steve is into you, Ms. Harper. You’ve got something about you.”
