This morning marked the end of their vacation. Cindy left early, driving to the office while Jon stayed behind to clean up the breakfast dishes. By the time he finally got to work, Cindy was nowhere to be seen.
“He is driving me crazy!” Cindy complained, practically bursting with frustration. She filled Jon in on everything that had happened with Stephen earlier.
“Don’t you think my brother’s a jerk? I’ve been singing his praises to Rebecca, and now, look at me. The real fool is me! I feel so embarrassed… I don’t even know how to face Rebecca right now.”
Jon pressed his lips together, thinking it over. “Actually, something about this feels off.”
He’d known Stephen for nearly thirty years. There was no way Stephen would just let a rumor like that spread unchecked.
Cindy huffed, clenching her fists. “So, you think it isn’t just a rumor? That he feels guilty?”
Jon gave her a half-smile. “You really don’t have much faith in him, do you? Even if the kid was his, there’s no way he’d just let the gossip spiral. That’s just not like him.”
Cindy paused, letting his words sink in. He was right, it didn’t add up. Actually, it made no sense at all. This wasn’t Stephen’s style. She realized she’d gotten herself all worked up because she didn’t want Rebecca to get hurt. The second she saw those nasty comments online, she’d lost it and rushed to the office to confront him.
Now, with Jon’s calm perspective, she was finally able to think straight.
Cindy narrowed her eyes. “Are you saying my brother is planning something big?”
Jon shrugged. “I don’t know, but I trust Stephen. He knows what he’s doing. If he’s handling things differently than we expect, there’s a reason for it.”
He ruffled her hair. “Instead of stressing about all this, why not think about what you want for dinner tonight? Let me know, and I’ll grab some groceries after work.”
Since they’d started living together, aside from the first couple of meals when they ordered takeout, Jon had taken over the kitchen. Cindy felt kind of guilty.
“I can cook tonight. You’re already so busy with work,” she offered.
