Bruce’s eyes were razor-sharp as he stared at Joan. Then he gave a short, cold laugh. “They broke up ages ago. I don’t need to work with you. Besides, I actually have a shot at getting Rebecca back. But you, Ms. Knotts, I don’t think you’ll ever get through the Duncan family’s front door.”
Joan bristled at his words and shot back, “Who says that? George wants my son recognized by the family. It’s just a matter of time before I’m in, too. But you, Mr. Lamont, are you so sure you can win Rebecca over again?”
She looked him up and down, silent judgment clear in her eyes.
Bruce’s expression darkened. “Not many people know the real story about the car accident that killed the Duncan brothers. Turns out I’m one of the few.”
Joan’s eyes went wide. She knew George had done everything he could to bury the truth all those years ago. Still, someone had found out.
She took a slow, steady breath. “Let me ask you just one thing, Mr. Lamont. Do you want to get back with Rebecca—and do it fast?”
Bruce frowned, picking up on her choice of words. “What do you mean by ‘fast’?”
Joan leaned in a little. “I know a drug. If you inject it and use hypnotism, it’ll make someone forget a chunk of their memories. You can set their mind back to a certain point in time.”
She held his gaze. “If Rebecca gets this, she’ll forget her whole secret fling with Stephen and go back to when you two almost got engaged. Would you go for it?”
Bruce swallowed hard. The idea was tempting. Going back to how things were with Rebecca had haunted him for so long. He’d made mistakes, lost his way, but he’d never stopped missing her.
Still, could he trust Joan? He studied her, searching her face.
Joan caught his doubt and brushed it off with a casual shrug. “I have no reason to trick you. Honestly, I want Rebecca out of the picture more than anyone. If she’s gone, Stephen is all mine.”
Bruce stayed silent, still not convinced. “So what’s your plan?” His voice was cold.
Joan saw her chance and laid it all out. “I’ll figure out a way to get Rebecca alone, knock her out, and bring her to you. You get everything ready to take her out of the country. I’ll send the drug and hire a hypnotist. When you get there, someone will tell you what to do next.”
