Morris just assumed Bruce was curious and shrugged, “She knows what she’s doing. When she first showed up with her kid, looking for Stephen, we all thought she was dreaming. But Stephen didn’t deny anything, and now there are rumors the Duncan family wants the child to be officially recognized. Joan really is impressive. Still…”
Bruce glanced over. “Still what?”
Morris lowered his voice. “Word is, Brett from the Duncan family’s second branch is pretty close with her. I figure she’s making all this noise because she’s got their support.”
“So you’re saying Joan’s just a pawn in the fight between Stephen and Brett?” Bruce raised an eyebrow.
“Pretty much.”
Bruce gave a small, knowing smile. If that was true, then maybe Joan’s story really checked out. She might not have much power herself, but Brett was nothing to scoff at.
Outside, Joan was saying goodbye to a group of people. They’d all shown up looking to get close to her, drawn in by the scent of money and power. It was wild what a little wealth and influence could do. She didn’t even have it all yet, but just brushing against that world was enough to make people fall over themselves to please her.
Just then, Bruce and Morris stepped out of the elevator and walked over. Joan and Bruce locked eyes for a moment. She gave him a polite nod.
Morris blinked in surprise. “Wait, you know her?”
Bruce immediately looked away. “No. Let’s go.”
The driver was already waiting for them. They got in their car and left.
Joan took in Bruce’s guilty expression and couldn’t help but smile to herself. It looked like things were going her way. She turned and headed to the parking garage, where her car was waiting. Brett had bought it for her, saying it would make things easier.
She opened the door, got in, and was about to start the engine when a shadow suddenly darted in front of her car. It was a man, rough and dark, with a nasty scar slashing across his cheek. One of his eyes was half-shut, maybe blind.
Joan gasped, her hand flying up to her mouth.
