When the two young guys realized that Cindy really did have a husband, and that she and her husband seemed genuinely close, they quickly shifted their attention to Rebecca. Their faces were a little pink as they looked at her. “Hey, how long are you staying here?”

Rebecca hesitated. “Uh… three days.”

The guys perked right up. “We know this place pretty well. Want some company? We could show you around.”

Rebecca instantly felt awkward, her eyes darting toward Cindy for help. But Cindy, that traitor, had already turned her phone so the camera was pointed straight at Rebecca. Which meant someone else was getting a perfect view of the whole scene, including the boys hitting on her.

Rebecca touched her nose, about to say no, but Cindy jumped in before she could. “Sure, why not? Sounds fun. Where are you staying? Do you have time this afternoon?”

The two guys lit up. “Yeah, we’re totally free. Whenever you want to hang out, just let us know. Here, let’s swap contacts .”

Rebecca stared at the phone, forced a polite smile, and shot Cindy a sharp look. Cindy just winked at her, pretending she couldn’t help. Of course she was doing this on purpose. She wanted someone in particular to see just how popular her best friend was. If you don’t appreciate her, plenty of other people will.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the call, Stephen’s face was so dark he looked like he could storm out of the room. He crossed his legs and leaned back on the sofa, a lazy smirk tugging at his lips. “So, we’re not pretending anymore? You’re just going to call him your husband right in front of me?”

Cindy froze. She realized she’d slipped up. She cleared her throat and looked everywhere except at Stephen. “You heard wrong. I didn’t say that.”

Stephen gave a short laugh. “I’m not deaf, Cindy.”

Cindy slapped the table. “I’m warning you. If you tell Mom or Grandpa, you’re dead meat.”

Stephen looked completely unbothered by her threat. He just raised an eyebrow. “That depends on how you behave.”

Cindy’s eyes darted. “What are you talking about? I don’t get it.”
