Marissa nodded, pulled out her phone, and called. The line connected, but nobody picked up. She hung up and tried again. This time, someone finally answered.

“Mr. Duncan, it’s ringing,” Marissa said.

Brett leaned in, ready to talk, but a robotic voice interrupted from the other end. “Sorry, the number you dialed is powered off.”

Brett’s expression turned dark. Marissa was caught off guard. “She’s ignoring us on purpose.”

Brett took a steadying breath, grabbed his personal phone, and fired off a long text to Cindy. Fifteen minutes crawled by before Cindy finally called back.

“Brett, I’m on vacation and missed your call. What’s up?”

He knew that was just an excuse, but he let it slide and got right to the point. “I heard you’re on vacation. When are you back?”

“Tomorrow. Why?”

“It’s nothing urgent. Ms. Harper’s suspended, so nobody’s handling her work right now. You know this area best, so I’m giving it to you.”

There was a long, loaded silence on the other end.

A slight smile tugged at Brett’s lips. He knew Rebecca and Cindy were close. If he dumped this on Cindy, Rebecca wouldn’t be able to just sit back and watch. She’d have to care about her friend. That was the plan.

Brett loosened his tie and went on. “It’s settled, then. Start work as soon as you’re back tomorrow. If you have any questions, reach out to Ms. Harper remotely.”

He didn’t give Cindy a chance to protest. He hung up, feeling pretty pleased with himself.
