George, hit hard by everything that had happened with the family, couldn’t take it. He fainted. The family doctor checked him over, and eventually, he came to, looking a little lost.

Stephen was right there beside him, trying to lighten the mood. “Don’t stress yourself out, Grandfather. Your health comes first. And honestly, you didn’t lose anything. You actually gained a great-grandson.”

George shot him a sharp look. “You couldn’t have warned me? I was mortified in front of every important person in town.”

Stephen just scratched his nose, sheepish. “I only figured out the whole story a couple of days ago myself.”

George let out a heavy sigh, sounding every bit his age. “Still, I’m glad you were careful and kept an eye on things. Otherwise, I might never have known the truth. How’s Brett doing?”

After Joan was taken away, Brett wasn’t in much better shape than George. He looked like all the life had been sucked right out of him. He didn’t talk, barely moved, and even needed help just to walk.

Stephen explained, “Frank called a doctor to check on him. The doctor said it’s just the shock. He’s lost his words for now, but it’s temporary. The housekeeper put Ben next to him. Give him a few days, he’ll be okay.”

George nodded, finally reassured.

As Stephen stepped out of the old man’s room, he nearly bumped into Jon. “Grandfather’s alright?” Jon asked.

“He’s okay,” Stephen answered.

The two of them walked out together. Stephen fussed with his sleeves and asked, almost offhand, “You told Cindy everything?”

Jon froze for a second, then touched his nose, a little guilty. “How did you know?”

Stephen grinned. “Come on. Everyone can see how much you love her.”

Jon cleared his throat, embarrassed. “Don’t laugh at me. You’ll be the same once you get married.”
