As evening settled in, the car rolled to a gentle stop outside her apartment building. Rebecca unbuckled her seatbelt and turned to him with a little smile.
“Drive safe, okay? Let me know when you get home,” she said.
He caught her arm before she could open the door. Rebecca blinked, not sure what he was up to.
Stephen leaned closer, tilting his head just a bit. “Can I have a goodnight kiss?” He said, almost like he was asking for a treat.
Rebecca couldn’t help the eye roll. “It’s not even that late,” she muttered. But the hope in his eyes made her heart melt.
She leaned in and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek.
“There. Happy now?” she teased, patting his face like she was calming down a stubborn kid. “I’m really going.”
He clearly wasn’t ready to let go. He hugged her tight, stealing a few more kisses before she wriggled free, laughing.
“I mean it, Stephen. I’m leaving!” she called out as she finally got out of the car.
She waved goodbye, still smiling, but when she turned around, her smile froze. Her mom was standing right there behind her.
Rebecca’s heart jumped. She stared for a second, totally caught off guard. “Mom? When did you get here?”
Samantha gave her a long look, then glanced over at the car. She let out a short, unimpressed snort and walked ahead without a word.
“Mom, wait up,” Rebecca called, hurrying after her.
Back in the car, Stephen sat there, hands limp on the steering wheel. Should he run after her and explain? But what if that only upset Samantha more? He just stared after them, totally lost.
As the Rolls-Royce turned the corner and drove away, someone else stepped out from behind a tree. Bruce’s face was tight and stormy.
He clenched his jaw, the muscle at his temple twitching. Rebecca and Stephen, together again. Seriously? Why did it have to be this way?
She’d broken up with him because of Sonja, because he couldn’t let her go. But with Stephen, she was willing to overlook even bigger things. Stephen had a past, had a kid with his ex, and Rebecca was okay with being a stepmom. But with him, she wouldn’t even give them another chance.
It wasn’t fair!

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
