Stephen couldn’t wait any longer. He called his uncle. “Hey, what are you up to?” He tried to sound casual, but his real meaning was clear. If you’re not busy, can you just let my girlfriend go already?

Dr. Palmer gave a little snort. “You greedy kid. I bet you heard your aunt is making braised pork tonight. If you want some, come over. It’s hot and fresh.”

Stephen’s smile faltered. He quickly got serious. “So you’re at home, not at the university?”

Dr. Palmer replied, “I’ve got no classes for me today. Why would I go to campus?”

If that was true, then why did Rebecca say Dr. Palmer wanted to see her? If his uncle hadn’t called her in, Rebecca should’ve been home by now. It didn’t take an hour to ride a bike from campus. Something wasn’t right.

His stomach dropped. He hung up and called Rebecca. No answer. Maybe she was biking and didn’t hear her phone. He waited a few minutes, tried again. Still nothing.

Panic started creeping in. Stephen gripped his phone and made a snap decision. He turned the car around and headed straight for the university. There was no sign of Rebecca anywhere on the road.

Maybe she went home first? He forced himself to breathe, circled back to her apartment complex, and ran to her door, ringing the bell over and over.

Samantha opened the door. Stephen was out of breath. “Ma’am, is Rebecca back?”

Samantha looked surprised and shook her head. “No. I tried calling her ten minutes ago, but she didn’t pick up.”
