Rebecca peered over the railing and realized she and the maid were actually on the second floor. The living room below was completely empty, not a trace of Bruce anywhere. When she glanced toward the front door, she spotted two bodyguards standing watch. Upstairs, there was a tiny attic, but it looked too cramped to be useful.
Once she slipped into the bathroom, Rebecca wasted no time locking the wooden door. She leaned against it, scanning every inch of the space. It was as bare as it could get, just a toilet and a basic shower. But at least there was a window. That gave her a tiny bit of hope.
She took a long, steadying breath, then flushed the toilet. Letting the sound cover her movements, she hurried to the window and tried to push it open, but it wouldn’t budge at all. Her body was still weak, and forcing the window felt impossible. After a few tries, she gave up and stood on her toes to look outside. The second floor wasn’t that high. If she had to jump, she’d probably survive.
Exhaling slowly, she unlocked the bathroom door and followed the maid back out. As they stopped outside her bedroom, Rebecca caught the maid’s arm. “I’m still hungry. Could you bring me something else to eat?”
She needed to keep her strength up. If she was going to get out of here, she’d need all her energy.
The maid’s face brightened. “That’s wonderful news. You’re finally eating again. I’ll tell Mr. Lamont right away. He’ll be thrilled.”
Rebecca stepped in quickly. “No, please don’t tell him yet. I’ll let him know myself when he comes back tonight.”
The maid nodded, understanding. “It’s always best for lovers to talk things out themselves.”
Rebecca’s expression tightened. Lovers? That couldn’t be further from the truth. Bruce was the last person in the world she wanted to see.
The maid seemed to notice her mood shift and added softly, “While you were unconscious, Mr. Lamont was so worried. He hardly left your bedside. He even took care of you himself. He really loves you.”
Rebecca turned away, her jaw clenched. What did this woman know? Bruce was completely out of his mind.
“How long was I out?” Rebecca asked quietly.
“Almost two days,” the maid replied.
So she’d been stuck here nearly two days. With travel time, that meant it had been four or five days since she vanished. Her mom and Stephen must be frantic. She had promised to introduce Stephen to her mother, to finally change her mom’s mind about him. And now she had simply disappeared.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
