Rebecca shot him a look and let out a dry laugh. “Wow. Guess you think I’m a bigger threat than I thought. All these bodyguards for one helpless woman?”

Bruce smiled and shook his head. “You’re not helpless. You’re smarter than you let on.”

He reached out to touch her face, but Rebecca turned away, making it clear she wanted nothing to do with him. For a moment, Bruce looked disappointed, but he quickly brushed it off, telling himself to just get through one more night. Tomorrow, once the hypnotist arrived, everything would go back to how it was.

“Let’s eat. Dinner’s ready.”

Rebecca trailed behind him, taking the chance to study the house more carefully. She noticed two guards by the front door and another two out at the main gate. They were all big guys with dark skin, probably locals from the island. With their size and strength, Rebecca had no doubt they could snap her like a twig if they wanted.

She knew there was no point trying to fight her way out. If she was getting out of here, she’d have to outthink them.

Dinner was sandwiches, again. Apparently, the maid only knew how to make this one thing. Rebecca ate as slowly as she could, chewing each bite just to stall for time. The last thing she wanted was to be stuck upstairs in the bedroom with Bruce. Who knew what he’d try?

Bruce seemed to think she just didn’t like the food. He rolled up his sleeves and asked the maid if there was any pasta in the kitchen. The maid hesitated, then nodded. “We have some.”

Bruce turned to Rebecca. “You don’t have to eat if you don’t want to. Let me make you some pasta.”

The maid’s eyes were practically glowing, like she thought Bruce was the most caring boyfriend ever. Rebecca rolled her eyes. Seriously, what kind of sad life did the maid have if she could turn a hostage situation into some kind of love story in her head?

Still, the sandwiches were dry as dust and pasta sounded like a major upgrade.

While Bruce was busy in the kitchen, Rebecca stood up and wandered over to the window.
