Rebecca had just gotten back to her room when the maid moved to lock the door behind her. Rebecca frowned. “What if I need to use the bathroom at night?”
The maid paused, a bit uncertain. “You can wake me up. I’m right next door.”
Rebecca kept her tone light, almost apologetic. “I’d hate to do that. You’ll be sleeping so well, and then I’d have to shout and wake you up. That’s just cruel. Besides, the room is so empty, my voice would echo. I’d end up waking up half the house and feel terrible about it.”
She leaned in, lowering her voice like they were sharing a secret. “Why not just give me the key? If I need to go, I can unlock the door myself. I’ll be super quiet, I promise. Mr. Lamont will never know. What do you think?”
The maid hesitated, clearly torn. “Um...”
Rebecca pounced on her uncertainty. “You look exhausted. Those dark circles under your eyes are serious. You know, people who don’t sleep well for a long time have an eighty percent chance of dropping dead suddenly. You’re about to get paid a lot, right? You wouldn’t want to die before you even get to spend it, would you?”
Of course, Rebecca was making it all up, but the maid seemed so naïve, she’d probably believe anything. Sure enough, the maid’s eyes went wide and she clapped a hand over her mouth. “Oh no, that’s terrifying! I had no idea lack of sleep was that dangerous!”
She glanced down the staircase. There were guards at the main entrance and out by the gate. What trouble could possibly happen? Mr. Lamont’s girlfriend was so thin, she probably couldn’t escape even if she tried to fly.
Thinking it over, the maid slipped Rebecca the key, her voice pleading. “Please, don’t tell Mr. Lamont. He’d fire me on the spot. My family relies on this job, we have nothing else.”
Rebecca smiled warmly, putting a finger to her lips. “I promise. This is just between us. I won’t say a word.”
Relieved, the maid finally left.
The villa went still and silent in the middle of the night. Rebecca moved quietly, unlocking the door and tiptoeing toward the bathroom. She slipped inside, closed the door, and pulled out the little wrench she’d stashed away. She got back to work on the window, loosening it, sweat trickling down her back as the minutes dragged by.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
