Rebecca’s thoughts spun out of control. All she wanted was for Bruce to wrap up his argument and go to bed so he wouldn't get in the way of her escape. But, of course, nothing ever went how she hoped. Bruce just kept ranting. Then, out of nowhere, one line made her blood run cold. His voice came through gritted teeth. “You actually think I need your hypnosis? Fine. I’ll just use the drugs on her. Forget hypnosis.”
Rebecca’s heart pounded so hard she could barely breathe. Who was he planning to drug? And why even bother with hypnosis? Who was on the other end of that call? She had a million questions, but she was sure of one thing. Whether it was drugs or hypnosis, it had to be about her. Now it all made sense. No wonder he’d said things would go back to the way they used to be. This was his plan all along, so sneaky and disgusting.
She felt sick just thinking about it. Her whole body trembled, and for a second, all she wanted was to kill him, to make him pay. Rebecca clamped a hand over her mouth, curling up tight on the narrow windowsill, barely daring to breathe. Darkness swallowed her, her eyes burning with fear and anger. She knew she had to get out, and she had to do it soon.
Suddenly, there was a loud crash from the study, like someone had knocked everything off a desk. It sounded like the call hadn’t gone Bruce’s way, and now he was throwing a tantrum. Time seemed to crawl until the noises finally faded and the light under the door blinked out. Finally. He must have gone to bed.
But what about when he woke up? Would the first thing he did be to come find her and stick her with whatever drug he’d been talking about? Rebecca waited, barely breathing, just to be sure. When everything was finally quiet, she found her chance. She took a deep breath, squeezed her eyes shut, and jumped.
The landing rattled her from head to toe. For a second, her vision went dark, pain shooting up from her feet like she’d been slammed with a hammer. But her plan worked. The ground here was soft and loose, perfect for a silent landing. She scrambled behind a huge empty flowerpot, heart thumping, ears straining for any sign she’d been heard.
Nothing. Relief bubbled up inside her. She’d made it this far. All she had to do now was get past the guards at the gate and she’d be free.
Rebecca squinted, trying to get a clear look at the entrance. She could just make out a single guard standing there. The maid hadn’t lied. The guards really did take turns. That had to be her chance. If she moved right when they switched shifts, while they were distracted and tired, maybe she could slip past.
She stretched her legs, checking for any injuries. Luckily, her months of regular exercise paid off. If she hadn’t kept in shape, she’d have never survived that jump.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
